Spring is here. It arrives in sudden bursts with the pink blossoms of the cherry trees, and new flowers appearing each day. Spring is a time of abundant growth and renewal, and it is infectious. The tradition of Spring cleaning mirrors the renewal of the earth as we dream of organized closets, no more mismatched socks, and optomistically consider tackling the windows that are blurry with a winter of little fingerprints. We experience a glorious sense of possibility.
The dictionary offers intriguing definitions of renewal, including "to make new spiritually", "to restore to existence", "to make extensive changes" and "to begin again or become new". Spring offers us the opportunity to "spring" into a more whole way of being with ourselves and our families. Old patterns and beliefs can be set aside as we choose to begin again. Change is indeed possible, a reality that we see each day as new buds spring forth on branches that were bare the day before.
The changes of spring, however, are not without a foundation, as shown by one of the definitions of Spring: "to arise from a source". Over the long winter months nature has been quietly resting and storing up the energy needed to burst forth. Compassionate self-care allows us to create our own deep source of energy and strength to support us we move into these new ways of being.
As you watch the earth gradually become "restored to existence", reflect on the aspects of your life that have been set aside in the busyness of motherhood. What would you like to see restored to existence in your life? Perhaps there are beliefs or ways of being in your life that are draining rather than life-giving. Gift yourself with an afternoon soaking in the warmth of the sun and consider what you need to renew yourself in body and spirit. Go ahead, clean your closets! and while you're at it, transform that energy of spring cleaning into a spring clearing and make way for the new you to emerge!
